Before you rent a boat in South Florida, it helps to know what the state expects from you as an operator. The rules are simple, and most renters can be ready to go the same day.
Who needs a boating safety card
Florida requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 to complete an approved boating safety course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more. Once you complete the course, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) issues a Boating Safety Education Identification Card. You must carry that card along with a photo ID while operating the boat.
If you were born before January 1, 1988, you are exempt and can operate without the card.
Options for visitors and first time renters
Approved online courses can be completed quickly, and temporary certificate options exist for people who want to get on the water right away. Rules can change, so check the current requirements on the official FWC website before your trip. Life jackets and basic safety
Every boat we rent carries a US Coast Guard approved life jacket for each passenger, and children under 6 must wear one while the vessel is underway. We also go over local no wake zones, channel markers, and weather basics before you leave the dock.
